Who Is Anti-Stroller?

iStock_000005316644XSmall[1]_strollerI ask this question because in a recent New York Times article, “The Latest in Strollers? Mom and Dad,” by Jennifer Bleyer, some women were identified as babywearing anti-stroller moms.

I agree, babywearing makes a lot of sense.  It can be easier for the mom, it can calm a crying baby and it can help create a nice physical bond between the two.  But why would one’s love of babywearing have to go so far as to be against strollers?

It takes a lot of energy to be against something, and I’m not sure how any mom could find an extra burst to be against a piece of transportation equipment.

Either way, babywearing is in fact making a huge impact in the mommy market.  Is it a temporary trend?  Are babies the new accessory?  Celebrities like Brad Pitt, Katie Holmes and Gwen Stefani have been seen wearing their babies.  Do you wear your baby?  I tried the sling with my son, but it became uncomfortable for me by the time he was a few months old.  Maybe next time around, I’ll put a little more time into finding the right carrier for me.

Are you registering for a baby carrier or sling?  Do you wear one?  If so, which brand?  Did you like it Do you and your mate like the same carriers or do you use different ones?

I had a Snugli carrier with my first 3 babies, but it was awkward to put on and take off, and it never quite fit my frame. I’m 5′1″ tall, so it’s hard to fit into things that are designed for average-sized people. I seldom used the Snugli, and preferred to use my stroller. With my 4th baby I had a baby shower and two of my good friends chipped in to buy me a Maya Wrap. I used it with baby #4 and currently with #5, and I absolutely love it. I got rid of the Snugli.

If I wear my baby in the sling for a long time my shoulder does start to hurt. I’ve heard that this doesn’t happen with wraps like Moby, so I’m thinking of trying one of those. I can switch shoulders to alleviate the discomfort, and that helps. My babies enjoy being in the sling, and there are times that the sling is the only way to calm my baby.

I don’t wear my baby around the house while I do things. It’s too cumbersome for me because I move around so much and I’m concerned about having to bend over, cook and such with the baby in the sling. I also still use a stroller. If I’m planning a long walk I’ll take the stroller, and stick the sling in the bottom of it. That way when we get to our destination (like the local park) I can park the stroller and put the baby in the sling so I can keep up with the older kids while they play. I also use a double stroller because my youngest two are only 18 months apart, and the toddler isn’t quite big enough to walk with the others. Occasionally I wear the baby in the sling and use the single stroller for my toddler. It’s also much easier to toss the sling in the diaper bag instead of lugging a big heavy stroller around, loading it into and out of the car. I love the flexibility of using both the stroller and the sling for whatever fits my needs at the time.

For me it’s not about accessorizing or doing what’s popular. I do what works best for me, and everyone else can do what works for them!
